Messages remaining in my smtp.rcn.com Drafts folder

I've been getting this error when trying to send messages from my RCN email account:
H9 NO UID STORE failed
I thought it might be related to port 583 being blocked, however, I can send emails through gmail's smtp server over port 583.
I was able to solve this problem by setting Scynchronization Schedule to Connected. Not sure why this works but it does.

    “Connected” is not related to SMTP. The standard port is 587, but I assume that was a typo.

    The error message is also not related to SMTP, but IMAP. Maybe the problem is not related to sending at all, but a mailbox within your IMAP account which cannot synchronize changes? Make sure all mailboxes are online within the account (look under SOURCES).

    If you can reproduce the issue then we can create some server logs to see why it might fail.
