Upgrade Mac OS to 10.12.6 and MailMate just hangs

Reported by Thomas G. Schaffernoth | September 21st, 2017 @ 09:51 PM

Hey,

I updated yesterday to Mac OS 10.12.6, and now all I get with MailMate is the rainbow color wait indicator. I can no longer use the application. Looks like it is in a deadlock. I submitted a crash report to Apple when I had to force-quit the application. I do not want to delete the app because I have so many smart mailboxes and email accounts.

I have enclosed a screenshot of the App on the Desktop. I have attached a copy of the Activity Monitor with the MailMate highlighted. Hope that helps. Seems it is consuming memory and on the rise. This has only been about 15 minutes after starting the app and waiting for the rainbow color wait indicator to dismiss.

Please help me!

Sorry about your trouble. Could you run the following in a Terminal window and upload the result:

    sample MailMate 10 -f ~/Desktop/sample_mailmate.txt

Unfortunately, I don't get the hang reports from Apple.

It's very late at my location and I won't be able to reply again before tomorrow. Sorry about that!

(In any case, you won't lose your account and mailbox settings.)

Just in case it is some kind of fixed issue, try downloading the latest beta: https://updates.mailmate-app.com/archives/MailMate_r5418.tbz

    Hey Benny,

Here you go. Thanks for the help! I need it.

    Hey Benny,

With the latest release, r5418, the issue is still present. I've attached another run of a sample as well. Thanks!

It seems like MailMate is actually busy working, but the task might be too big for it finish within a reasonable amount of time.

How many emails do you have (approximately) in MailMate?

We can learn a bit more by enabling the following debug variable and launch from a Terminal window:

defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDebugSaveHeaders -bool YES
    /Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/MacOS/MailMate

(I would expect this to tell us which header file is problematic.)

    Hey Benny,

I executed the statement on the command line. I've uploaded the screenshot of the results since the results are displayed on stdout.

With this current issue, I have let the program run for hours and it was still hung/not able to work through the issue. Wonder if there is a way to check the integrity of the database for the Mailmate product outside of the application. Any utilities I can run on it? Wonder if there is some type of data state that is causing the Mailmate product to hang or endlessly loop/consume CPU. Prior to this issue, upon launch, the MailMate product would consume CPU significantly for a much smaller amount of time than would be fine.

Thanks, Benny I appreciate the help.

The lines were supposed to be two separate lines.

In any case, I have to go soon and therefore I'll provide instructions to force MailMate to refetch all emails instead (you didn't tell me how many emails you have). You need to remove the following folders:

    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Attachments
    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex
    ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages

That last one might be located elsewhere if you have enabled the custom location for Spotlight in the General preferences pane.

Then launch MailMate and it should start re-fetching emails in all of your accounts.

If you are not in a hurry then we can try debugging the issue first, but I won't be able to respond before tomorrow. Sorry.

    Hey Benny,

I would like to debug. Good to have the other information just in case.

Here is the output of the two statements above run separately. Sorry for not doing that first time.

-->defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDebugSaveHeaders -bool YES

Looks like Mailmate is busy with the headers.

    Hey Benny,

    Good News.

I have Revision 5419 (Friday, September 22, 2017) — Version 1.9.7 installed now, and I no longer see the issue. I let the app run for a bit as well.

I noticed in the release notes for r5419:

Fixed various issues on High Sierra.

    Thinking that made a difference.

I've attached the output from the command line of the Mailmate application running from the command line.

Thanks for all the help Benny.
    Tom

I have removed the folders but Mailmate still doesn't launch...a bit of an issue as I can't send or receive email. Is there a way of rolling back?

@Thomas: If you have a backup of the following files when they were in the problematic state then you are welcome to share them with me:

    /Users/Tom/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Database.noindex/Headers/#unquoted#lc.*

Send them using “Help ▸ Send Feedback” (compress them first using the Finder).

@Gareth: This seems to be a different issue and you probably did not need to delete the folders -- although I cannot be sure of that. You can try deleting the file mentioned in the error message. This can be done in a Terminal window like this:

    rm /Users/GLOC/Library/Application Support/MailMate/.database_lock

But I'm not sure how it would get into this state. It might indicate a more serious problem with the machine not directly related to MailMate.

I have tried deleting the folders as explained in the posts 22 Sep 03:08 pm, downloading a new copy of MailMate.app and copying it to the Applications folder and then relaunching, but to no avail.

When I click on the new Mailmate icon in the toolbar at the bottom (or double click on the mailmate.app file in Applications), the MM icon 'jumps up and down' as if it is loading, and then stops doing this after bit and shows the application is closed.

    This is a little frustrating...

I have added a screenshot of the Mailmate folder so you can see what is there. The Database.noindex and Messages folders were created this morning.

Any idea what I need to do...

Interestingly I can hear a 'ping' when new mail is received but the MailMate app does not have a 'black dot' underneath showing the application is open...

@Gareth: I understand the frustration. Did you try deleting the file I asked you to? I just noticed that I forgot to escape a space in the line I provided:

    rm /Users/GLOC/Library/Application\ Support/MailMate/.database_lock

Paste the line above in a Terminal window.

    Hi Benny,

I am sorry, I did not see your response at 07:46 on the 23rd.

I ran the delete file command it asked my to rebuild the database. I am in the process of doing this despite a number of error and warning messages coming up which have required me to re-open MM.

I am now downloading 12000+ emails...!

I'll let you know how I get on...

    Thanks

@Gareth: You should be able to enable “watching” the ticket and then you should be notified by email. I don't know why this doesn't happen automatically when commenting a ticket. It's unfortunately not optional behavior.

All appears to be working at my end now. Thank you!

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

@Gareth: Well, obviously something went wrong at some point which put MailMate into this state. This might or might not be a bug in MailMate. Let me know if it happens again.

Will do, but here's hoping it won't be needed.
