Mail cannot be found after being moved from Inbox to another folder

Reported by Phu Nguyen Anh | October 9th, 2011 @ 12:32 PM

Hi,

I sometimes got a problem that email cannot be found after being moved, no crash or error occurred though. I tried to quite and start MailMate again but no help. I see there's a option to "synchronize" a folder but it cann't help either. I check the server side (via web interface) and I can see that email is there in new folder so the movement was done correctly. It seems to be a bug?
Also, I'm not sure what "synchronize" do but I think some kind of "re-synchronize/re-index" may be better in case I absolutely want to re-fetch all the message for that folder from server, that may help me in this situation.

PS: I use MaileMate and Outlook 2011 at the same time. Outlook doesnot see that email after moved by MailMate either, but after I restart it, it shows that email in new folder.

    Ok, I'm going to ask various questions. I don't have any specific ideas yet, so this is just an attempt to get some hints.

    Was the move(s) done using MailMate?

    Are both source and destination mailbox online (no grey mailbox state with 'offline' in parenthesis)?

    What are the names of the source and destination mailboxes?

    What is the server address (you can use private email if you do not want to state it here)?

    Do you still have a mailbox with missing messages?

    Can you reproduce the problem?

    Outlook restart: That is to be expected. Most email clients only check for new messages every x minutes except for the INBOX which is typically monitored using a so-called IDLE state. This is also true for MailMate.

    Hi,

    1. Was the move(s) done using MailMate?
      -> Yes
    2. Are both source and destination mailbox online (no grey mailbox state with 'offline' in parenthesis)?
      -> Yes
    3. What are the names of the source and destination mailboxes?
      -> Source is 'Inbox', destination mailbox is my customer's name so sorry I cann't list it here. I remember that I have this problem with that destination mailbox twice.
    4. What is server address?
      -> Will answer via email. BTW, how can I answer via private email?
    5. Do you still have a mailbox with missing messages?
      -> No
    6. Can you reproduce the problem?
      -> No, it sometimes occurs.

    About Outlook restart: usually restart is a solution but it seems that restarting doesnot cure this for MailMate. I know that email client usually have a seperate database for indexing/searching and we sometimes need to reindex it after a crash or so to make it work correctly, that's why I ask for a kind of re-index/re-synchronize feature. How do you think about it?

    Ok, 3. may indicate that the problem is somehow related to the mailbox
    name. There is a “Help ▸ Send Feedback...” menu item within
    MailMate you can use.

    With regard to 5., does this mean that the messages eventually appear in
    the mailbox in MailMate?

    The next version of MailMate is likely to include a feature for
    rebuilding the database, but this is intended for database corruption
    issues which can, e.g., arise when restoring MailMate files from a
    backup. The problem described in this ticket indicates a bug in
    MailMate. I would prefer fixing the bug rather than require users to
    re-index anything. That said, “resetting” a mailbox could be useful
    in other scenarios, so I've made a note of that.
