Funny little symbol related to tags

What is the funny little icon related to tags? What does it mean, and how is it used? Here is what I'm talking about when you choose to show it in a browser list. And, here is where it appears in the tag properties page. I really have no idea what it's for, and I can't find it described in the user docs.

In the Tags preferences pane, you can use this column to add an emoji for each tag. Use ⌃⌘+space to add an emoji like 🎃 to one of your tags. You'll then see it in most places where you see the tag and in the message list you can have it in a separate column. It is not synchronized with the IMAP server.
I hope this helps. I know it's not obvious, but I do think I've documented it in the manual.
