Odd count display of the Examples mailbox

Reported by Robert Brenstein | April 18th, 2017 @ 04:29 PM

I retained the "Examples" mailbox from the original install. I noticed recently that it started showing a count of messages, although it should not show it, as far as I can tell. See the attachments. This smartmailbox has no reference to any other mailbox and the counter display is set to none.

The displayed count changes, by the way.

Notice at the screenshot of the mailboxes that the category titles, that is MAILBOXES and SOURCES, also show the counters. I just realized that the same number is always shown for all of them (currently 37 on my computer, 80 on the screenshot), so it seems that the bogus counter is shown for all items that have no own counter.

Is this reproducible using the latest test release?

Does it persist after relaunching MailMate?

Do you still see it? (Sorry about the late response.)

It went away after a re-launch but it is back again (not immediately after the re-launch). I haven't seen that before, so it might be a side-effect of some change in a recent release. I am running 1.9.6 (5347) which seems to be the newest at this time.

I just noticed the same thing tonight, my "Examples" folder has a count showing, even though the setting is set to "No Count". Relaunching doesn't seem to do anything for me. Version 1.9.6 (5370)

The time has passed and I have seen this problem recur several times since the original report. Time seems to be the main factor -- if I run MM long enough, at some point I see the bogus counts. Clicking on the "Examples" mailbox from the original install actually showed an email in it (see attachment), so it seems to me that those items get connected to some mailbox somehow. Relaunching MM reliably fixes the issue.

I assume you have also seen this issue with the latest public release?

The displayed message seems to indicate that there is a problem with so-called sticky messages (emails which are still shown even if they are not part of the current mailbox -- e.g., when marking something unread in the mailbox for unread messages). This is contradicted though by the fact that the mailbox count is also 1 (it should not count sticky messages).

I've added some code to MailMate which should make it crash if this happens. For now, it's only enabled for me. I'll see if the issue is then triggered at some point.

No yet, but then it is quite new. As I said, the issue shows up when MM runs without relaunch for many weeks.

Ok, that makes it a bit tricky to debug :) If you see it again then I'll look into both detecting and logging when it happens.

Also, most likely it's not the amount of time passed but a somewhat rare specific order of events which triggers this issue.

Well, I did not have to wait as long as before... It just happened. The last thing I did was viewing mailing list posts and deleting them, by coincidence or not, from the mailbox that I gave you as a sample in ticket #1697. I am attaching the screenshot showing count of 22 messages for MAILBOXES, SOURCES, and Utilities ### as well as the content of the mailbox that the bogus mailbox list apparently relates to. Aside from the content of the mailbox, which includes unread as well as trashed messages (cf ticket #1697), the bogus list includes messages that I deleted today, which are properly not included in the real mailbox view. This makes me wonder if this ticket and #1697 are not related after all.

I can't attach files because upload quota is reached, so here are the links:

Instead of relaunching, I continued to use MM ignoring the display artifacts. Yesterday, the bogus counts disappeared and no messages are shown when I click on the Utilities mailbox (as it should be). I haven't done anything that I am aware of to trigger this. By coincidence or not, the issues described in ticket 1697 reset themselves as well, just as if I have done a relaunch.

Ok, it's interesting that it can occasionally “resolve” by itself, but it might just be because the messages involved in the miscount were moved/deleted.

I've seen the issue once myself since I last updated the ticket. I've now added that a warning pops up (just for me) such that I might be able to spot a pattern, but it hasn't happened since then.

I can't say for sure, but the messages were from a mailing list that I keep for 6 months before deleting and they were all recent. The list of messages stayed constant the last few times I checked. I mean exactly the same messages were showed.
