Gmail not syncing after change of Gmail password

I have three gmail accounts which sync to MailMate. I changed their passwords today and then MailMate prompted me to put in the new passwords. I added the new passwords a number of times for each account but the popup requesting the change of password kept 'popping up'. The 'edit imap' account in the Mailbox menu is greyed out so I am unable to change the passwords there. Currently all of my gmail accounts are 'offline'.
How do I change the passwords for these gmail accounts to the new passwords?

This is an issue in MailMate affecting some (most?) Gmail users. Update to the latest test release: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane.
