Email Sending Issues
Reported by Corey Zinn | September 22nd, 2016 @ 09:22 PM
I am getting an error message when sending emails sometimes. It does not seem to occur all the time as I have sent test emails to accounts I own and there is no issue. I have sent the same emails drafted in MailMate through Apple's Mail app and they work fine. The activity viewer was not helpful to me, but I am no expert with email.
I wondered if this was a 1and1.com issue (my email provider for most of my accounts), but it seems to work through Apple Mail.
Otherwise, there is very little I dislike about MailMate which is rare for an email client for me. I am using the trial version and was feeling good about purchasing until I had this issue.
The error message:
Failed to Send Message
Connection error (Connection refused).
Tip: Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0) before retrying. The SMTP log file might provide additional information.

I'm sorry. I think I've got it figured out. The SMTPs were set to "IMAP...." Not sure if I did this myself or if this was changed on its own somehow. I wouldn't be too shocked if I did this myself, but it surprises me that I would have done this with two different accounts. The others, however, are fine.

I've had another report about this on Sierra. It appears the account importer some times gets the wrong settings. This is not unlikely, because it's essentially a hack. Apple does not provide an official method of getting the Apple Mail settings.
I might need you to do some testing to track down this issue. Would you be willing to do that?
If yes, did you install Sierra and setup your Apple Mail accounts manually, or did you update to Sierra. In the latter case, when do you think you originally created the IMAP accounts in Apple Mail (which OS)?

I don't know what Sierra is. MailMate? I believe I did create most of the accounts in Apple Mail. Only two had the issue I had mentioned. I really cannot say what version of OS I was using when I originally entered the emails in Apple Mail, but now I am using 10.11.6. Well, unless my accounts were migrated from old computer when I bought this one Dec 2014, I would have been using whatever OS would have come on a Macbook at that time.
What kind of testing?

Sierra is macOS 10.12 which is the most recent update of OS X (which is now called macOS).
Testing: It would involve enabling a hidden preference in a Terminal window in order to get some debug output from the account importer.

Ah, I see. Yes, I thought it was early to update. Just send instructions and I'll get to it when I can.

Open a Terminal window and paste this line:
defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDebugElCapitanImporter -bool YES
Quit MailMate and launch it like this in the Terminal window:
/Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/MacOS/MailMate
Use the account import menu item (in the File menu).
Copy/Paste the output in the Terminal output into an email sent using “Help ▸ Send Feedback”.
Don't post the output in this thread since it'll contain your email addresses.

You did it right. I'll be looking into it and see if helps me track down the issue.
