Mailmate Allows Editing in Message Viewer Pane
Reported by Matt Gray | May 20th, 2016 @ 06:04 PM
Somehow, a message I received causes Mailmate to allow me to type within the displayed message in the viewer pane. Please see the attached video.
Steps
-
Receive a message (maybe only from the Microsoft Outlook iOS app?)
-
View the message in a layout that shows a message preview
-
Click on part of the message's text
Expected Results
I can highlight text but not edit text.
Actual Results
I can edit (delete, add, modify) the message text.
Version
MailMate/5234 MacBookPro11,3/x86_64/8/10.11.5

Can you share this email with me using “Message ▸ Forward as Attachment”? (Maybe an anonymized version if you know to do that using a text editor.)
I'm guessing that somehow the message contains an editable area (using HTML), e.g., using
contenteditable
. I haven't really considered if that is something MailMate should somehow prevent. -

It's probably the same issue as described for another email client here.

I emailed you off-ticket with a sample (non-anonymized) message.

@Matt: Thanks, that worked. My first attempt to fix it kind of worked, but it also prevented selecting text in the same text field (which is worse). I also noted that Apple Mail behaves like MailMate. Right now, I'm leaning towards not “fixing” this, and I'm not really sure I should fix it even if it was easy. It's an Outlook bug and it does not appear to have any serious security related side effects (the message is not really changed).

@benny: Thanks for taking a look. I agree with the direction you're leaning. For a moment, I thought I had found some rare and interesting MailMate bug. This feels like a very low priority or a
wontfix
to me as well. -

One concrete usability effect of this is that links inside the
contenteditable
are not clickable.Considering how rare these messages are, though, agree on dev resources being better spent on other issues.
