Default Email Client preference not sticking

Now that I've migrated to MailMate (1.9.4 on 10.11.3), I want to set MailMate as my default client so that the integration with OmniFocus works.

However, when I change the default in Preferences, it only sticks for a few seconds and then resets to Thunderbird (though displays as MailMate), often by the next time I open Preferences. Pictures attached. Thunderbird was my default but is not running.

Any idea what's happening?

    Yes, but I'm afraid there is not much I can do. See here. I'd love to learn that the problem is MailMate such that I could fix it, but currently I believe it's an OS X issue.

    Note that the blog post and the related mailing list message tells you that it might help to be a bit stubborn. Keep on changing it until it sticks. At least that has worked for me when debugging the issue.
