Moving from account INBOX to IMAP mailbox

Reported by Victor Yannacone | December 31st, 2015 @ 05:50 AM

When I move emails from INBOX to a named IMAP maibox the emails remain in the INBOX. How do I make them move or do I have to delete manually from INBOX after the Move??

No, that's not how it's supposed to work. I'm guessing you are either looking at “All Messages” (which includes almost all emails in all accounts) or one of the account mailboxes directly under SOURCES in the mailbox list (which each includes all emails of each account). Could that explain it?

(Technically, many IMAP servers do not support moving emails, but MailMate emulates it by doing a COPY and then an EXPUNGE. The user won't notice this unless there is a problem with the source or destination mailbox.)

I do not believe I made myself clear in my query. When I move an email message from "All Messages" to an individual subaccount under a primary source account, I expect the email to move from the source account to the subaccount and disappear from the general INBOX of the source account which is the way both Thunderbird and Apple mail operate. In MailMate, this does not happen.

My next problem is that when I delete a file from "All Messages" it remains on my dedicated IMAP server. This may be a server issue, but I would like to know definitely whether it is. It would mean that I have to clean my IMAP files on the server directly on the server rather than from my account on another machine.

The other strange or unfamiliar behavior is that whenever I send a message with a BCC to myself the same message appears twice in "All Messages", once in boldface and once in regular type. I'm not sure whether I can delete one of those duplicate copies, and if so which one. I use BCC as an alternative to placing the messages I send in "sent messages." By this method, I can more easily move them to the subaccount mailboxes under sources. I use those subaccount mailboxes as a content management system in order to collect and sort the more than 20,000 email messages on my IMAP server that I must maintain as essentially permanent records.

Thanks again for your kind attention to my queries.

The first part sounds like some of your mailboxes/accounts might be offline. Check under SOURCES in the mailbox list that none of the mailboxes are greyed out. Also, are all INBOX'es using a bold font?

“All Messages” shows all messages in all mailboxes in all accounts (except trash and junk). When you use Bcc then you'll see one email from the INBOX of the account and one message from the “Sent Messages” mailbox of the account. You can enable the “Source Mailbox” column in the message list to make this more obvious.

    I hope this helps.

    Thank you.

All the INBOX mailboxes under every source account are bold.

Using the "source mailbox", in the message list enabled me to strip out and delete all of the duplicate messages in the "Send Messages" mailbox which I do not need because I bcc all of the messages I send. Thank you again.

Ok, you could add a rule to “Sent Messages” which automatically deletes your sent messages, but you could of course also consider not Bcc'ing yourself. I think it's just a habit :-)
