How to delete messages with rule?

Reported by bradford | November 9th, 2015 @ 01:28 AM

I have an alarming number of people who seem to be using my email address to sign up on sites I would never visit, both English and non-English, and I end up getting many newsletters and daily advertising emails I don't want. I currently have rules set up for many of these domains on the Junk mailbox that cause them to be immediately deleted and marked as read - I got tired of having to sort through them all the time in my Junk mailbox. But that just moves them to the Deleted Messages mailbox, where I still have to sort though them when checking this mailbox before emptying.

What I would really like to do is never see these emails at all. But I haven't found a way to have Mailmate actually completely delete these emails rather than just moving them. Is there a way to set this up? If not, I'd like to file a feature request to add support for this behavior in the rule actions.

Thanks!
Brad Carpenter

I'm generally very careful about adding features which permanently delete emails. I think you can “hack” it by moving to “Deleted Messages” twice (although I'm not really sure this is not kind of a bug when used in rules). The second move to deleted messages is currently interpreted as deleting something which is already in “Deleted Messages”. This is interpreted as permanently deleting it.

Maybe it would be better to move them to a separate mailbox which you can more quickly review. Then hold down ⌥ to used “Message ▸ Delete Now” to avoid them being moved to “Deleted Messages”. It's also possible to enable the “Empty Mailbox...” menu item for all mailboxes using a hidden preference.

Let me know if this does not resolve your issue. I'll think about having an explicit rule to do permanent deletes.
