unexpected server response

Reported by craig mcmillan | October 27th, 2015 @ 10:13 AM

i'm seeing an increasing number of these :

https://www.evernote.com/l/AD4YHrpkwfdC04dqG0JdN58cUFHO7Jk7yBk

sometimes the message has been retrieved and the source looks like a regular MIME encoded message

sometimes the message has not been retrieved and i get a generated message like this :

==>

Unexpected server response

MailMate could not fetch the message with UID 21673 in the mailbox “INBOX” in the account “imap.googlemail.com”. This is not the actual message in your IMAP mailbox, but a message generated by MailMate as a replacement dummy. MailMate has repeatedly tried to fetch this message, but the server cannot provide it.

On the last attempt the server error message was as follows:

Time limit (36s) reached while trying to read data (imap.googlemail.com)

This is a relatively new feature created to handle various problems with various servers. I'm thinking MailMate probably gives up a bit too quickly when a server has temporary issues.

How often does this happen for you? (In order to determine how easy it'll be to debug.)

Does it work when you then use “Message ▸ Reset...”?

If you download this test release then a banner is also shown for this type of messages -- making it more clear that they are generated by MailMate.

(This never happens for me with various types of servers, but it may be related to your internet connection or when/if you switch location.)

it being a new feature probably explains why it's only started happening recently :) - it's been happening once every few days, though today it's happened 3 times. i don't have massive mail volumes - currently 50-100 messages a day

after doing a message->reset i had to rebuild the index, and then the message got downloaded again after message->reset ... but it seems to have the same problem

i don't think this is always connection related - i'm often mobile, so it may be connection related sometimes, but today i'm on a stable cat-5 connection

it was only really today, when it became clear that the messages corresponded to IMAP messages which were either completely or partially unable to be downloaded that this started to bother me - previously (having not seen an example of a partially downloaded message) i had assumed that the messages were entirely synthetic and inserted into the inbox because that was a sensible or convenient place to put an async notification

the account from which today's partial download came from is a recently configured google-apps account - nothing unusual about it afaik

Thanks for the details. I'll note that I should try to improve the wording.

    Could you try this:

    • Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0).
    • Wait for a new dummy message to arrive.
    • Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs”.

That should help me determine exactly why MailMate thinks it cannot fetch the message.

    Thanks in advance!
