Feature request: Default showing of active identity when composing messages

Reported by David Vereschagin | May 17th, 2011 @ 01:56 PM

I have multiple email accounts and have different accounts for different purposes. I like it that it's easy for me to switch identities when composing messages and that when replying most of the time MailMate picks the identity I want to use correctly.

However, things could be just a bit easier if the current identity being used to send the message were visible in the message composing window. This could be something like showing the From field in the headers with the active identity displayed and a dropdown being available to choose a different identity; or perhaps adding Identity to that mini-selection bar just above the body.

I'm attaching a couple of samples of what this might look like in the interface.

    • Assigned user set to “benny”

This should already look as your second example, but for some reason it does not display on your setup.

Have you added additional accounts recently?

Could you try to restart MailMate and see if there is still no From-popup?

I'll look into the relevant code. The From-popup should only be hidden when only 1 From-identity exists.

Could it be that you have a single identity with multiple email addresses? I think that case may fail currently.

Yes. I have one email account (I've never thought of it as an identity itself), and I've been adding identies by adding email addresses to the IMAP Account Settings. I couldn't see any other way to do it. Is there another way I should be doing this?

I fixed the issue with a configuration with only a single account with multiple addresses. Let me know if you think this was not the problem.

I'm sorry you had to go through the trouble of design suggestions. The current solution looks like your second suggestion, but it currently includes the name (I have a todo somewhere on removing the name if it is identical for all entries).

If you have a new build that I can try, I can confirm whether that was the problem.

BTW, as I said, I have a lot of email aliases. If what I'm doing is the correct way to handle them, it would be nice to have an easier way to add, review and edit them. The tiny, one-line text box is fine for only an alias or two, but beyond that it gets cumbersome.

Users with multiple addresses for an account typically also have multiple accounts. I think that is why the problem has not been reported before.

Do you use all of the addresses for new messages or are some of them only for replies? That is, do you only use them if something is sent to them and needs to be replied? If the latter is the case then MailMate can automatically detect these addresses in the headers and use them in the From field even though they are not explicitly stated in the account settings. (There are also some improvements with respect to this system in the next update.)

Write me a private email to get a beta version for testing.

None of the addresses are used only for replies, they're all used for new messages as well.

I'll drop you an email. Thanks!
