Only download a certain number of emails.

Can I download only a certain number of emails from the server, like the iPad does, say, 50. i.e. without having to download the entire mailbox? This is simply to save disk space on my SSD.

No, there are basically no features enabling you to “fetch less”. MailMate is fully offline.
The closest you can get is “Edit Subscriptions” in the IMAP account settings. You can use that to exclude specific mailboxes, e.g., older archives of emails.
It might be more flexible some day, but it's not a high priority.
