Date-related smart mailboxes not updating

Reported by Erik M-H | April 28th, 2011 @ 11:35 AM

Greetings!

I have a smart mailbox defined simply as "Date is within last 1 days", which has gradually gotten larger and larger. This morning, it had eight days' worth of mail in it. Editing its smart definition fixes it, but only temporarily.

I don't particularly care whether it changes "realtime" (mail from > 24 hours ago "drops off" as the clock ticks) or only when I choose the smart folder in the mailbox panel. Actually, even having it update only at midnight would be OK.

I was wondering when someone was going to notice this.

The ideal solution would explicitly watch for when a message should leave the set, but in this case I have now opted for the quick solution which I think will be good enough in most cases. In your case the set will be recomputed once an hour (only if the set is needed of course). For date comparisons involving more days, weeks, months, or years, the interval is larger, but never larger than a single day.

Write a feedback email if you would like to try a test version of MailMate with this fix.

    Wow -- now that's quick turn-around! :-)

I'd be very happy to test it if that would be helpful, but waiting for an official release is no problem, either. Thanks!

Write me an email via the feedback menu item in the help menu of MailMate. I'll then notify you when a test version is available (likely to be today).

    Hello, Benny!

Thanks for the opportunity to check this out. It works well if I switch out of and then back into the "today" smart folder; if I simply leave MailMate displaying the folder, it does not change — even after many hours have gone by.

This is far better than it was, and is perfectly acceptable for my needs — but it sounded as if you meant for it to update hourly.

That is how the fix is supposed to work. It is not perfect, sorry. I've
made a note to improve it later on.

It's perfectly OK, Benny -- I just wanted you to know, in case you'd thought it was updating hourly.

There is one problem, though: I've just noticed that the counter isn't updated when messages "fall out" of the mailbox. (E.g., unread messages are still being reported as unread in the smart mailbox even though they're no longer in the smart mailbox.) Not a big deal, except that:

When I do read the messages (obviously accessing them from a different folder), the counter still doesn't update. So, "All Messages" and my sources both show that I have 0 unread messages, but the "today's mail" smart folder still shows 4 unread. Changing the counter display to "No Count" and then back to "Unread" works around the problem, of course.

It is an important observation and it shows that my fix is too
primitive. I believe a proper solution to the date problem (messages
leaving/entering the mailbox immediately) is also going to fix this
    related problem.

This should be properly fixed in the next update.
