Leftover rebuild files after crashes

Reported by Andy Polaine | September 7th, 2014 @ 08:35 PM

I've had several crashes and rebuilds of the database recently. Now I have two folders in the Application Support folder named FilesForRebuilding and FilesForRebuilding 2. Can I safely delete these? I'd like to claim back several GB of space doing so.

Also, I deleted an iCloud source/account and I'm still left with the Archive folder in the Messages > IMAP > account name folder. I have backups of the messages and simply want these deleted to. Can I just delete them from the directory? I have no access to that archive folder from within Mailmate itself since I deleted the account.

Sorry about your trouble. If you are using a test version then I strongly recommend updating to the latest one since some test versions unfortunately have a rebuild-bug: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane.

You can safely delete the FilesForRebuilding folders if you are sure you are not missing any messages after the rebuild. The folders contain all messages MailMate was not able to use for rebuilding (for various reasons). Most importantly, you should look for Drafts or Sent Messages which were (for whatever reason) never uploaded to the IMAP server. All other messages should usually exist on the IMAP server even if MailMate did not use them for rebuilding.

The “Archive” folder should not contain anything and this might be a side-effect of another test-version bug. I'm not sure though why it would only be the Archive folder though. I suggest you try to remove the folder and then relaunch MailMate. You'll get another rebuild-request if it's a problem and this would actually be a good thing if you are suffering from the test-version bug indicated above.

Thanks, I'll try this out and see what happens. The MailMate folder was getting larger and larger...

Oh, what about the OldDatabase folder?

Same thing. That one is from a manual rebuild but is otherwise like FilesForRebuilding.

The test version bug I mentioned would also have the effect of the folder growing even without the rebuild folders (rebuilding did not work properly and files were not deleted properly like in your Archive folder).

That all seemed to work and about a hundred times faster (just a few MB vs several GB. Thanks.

    • State changed from “new” to “resolved”

Hopefully that does not mean that anything is missing.
