SMTP when there are two accounts with same e-mail address

Reported by Meindert | May 22nd, 2014 @ 10:42 AM

I transferred several accounts from Gmail/Google Apps with my own domain to Runbox with my own domain. I created a parallel account at Runbox and in MailMate to the original Gmail-MailMate account, then copied. I've kept some of the Gmail accounts in MailMate, offline, just in case.

I don't send outgoing mail on most of these accounts very often. Today I replied to an e-mail (from a Gmail account) and got an error that Gmail needed a password or something:

Enter password for ----- at "smtp.gmail.com" Unexpected return code 535 (expected 235): "5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted ... (blah blah blah)"

Is this a problem with Google, when it gets an e-mail from a domain that it maybe it thinks it controls the MX records for (although it doesn't any longer), getting confused, or is it MailMate now knowing which SMTP server to use (even though the e-mail was composed in response to an e-mail to the Runbox account)? Or something else?

(After this happened I started to just delete the Gmail accounts at Google and delete the mailboxes in MailMate, but I can't do this for all of them, including the one in question, just yet.)

No, this problem appears to be that the username/password given is not valid for any Gmail account.

After successfully connecting then Gmail might reject a message if the sending address does not match the address of the account, but that is not (yet) the problem here. It is possible to tell Gmail to accept other addresses as well (via web interface), but no need to do that if that is not the problem.

MailMate puts the message in the Drafts mailbox of the account that it thinks should be used to send the message (with the corresponding SMTP settings). You can select Drafts and then enable the “Source Mailbox” column in the messages outline to see where it is located.

I deleted the Google Apps/Gmail accounts altogether (which rather complicated to do--they hide the commands deep in the interface), and that solved the problem.

I'm really getting close to freedom from Gmail now, and it feels great.

I also discovered a great way to get free, relatively responsive support from Google: If you sign up for a paid Google account as a business, you get 30 days free, and you don't need to give them a credit card during that time. Then you can ask all the questions you want, and cancel.

Thanks for the update. We didn't really resolve what the problem was, but I'll close the ticket.
