Selection behavior when archiving messages in mailbox
Reported by Meindert | April 6th, 2014 @ 03:04 AM
When I archive a message in the middle of the list in the Inbox, the message disappears (as it should, since it's no longer in the Inbox) and the selection then goes to the previous message. This is different behavior than in Sparrow, which puts the selection on the following message. I prefer the Sparrow way because of the way I go through my Inbox.
I will generally have a couple of e-mails at the top of the list in the Inbox that I have read and not yet acted on. Then I'll select the message after those and read it and decide what to do with it. If I decide to leave it for later, I'll mouse to the next message. If I decide to archive it, I'll do that. When I do that the next message to be dealt with is already selected and displaying. In MailMate, however, a message that I've already seen is displayed. So I have to cursor down to the message after it in the list.
Is the current selection behavior for any particular reason or another sort of workflow? If it was simply a random decision, maybe you could consider changing it.

People have different usage patterns. I haven't found the best way to handle this yet (defaults and settings), but there is a hidden setting for it which you could try. See here.

I didn't realize it was so complex. I chose unreadOrPrevious, but I might suggest you add a #5 and #6 choice: down (physically below the archived message) and up (the message above in the list), without regard to sort order. Actually, I suppose you could then add unreadOrUp and unreadOrDown at that point. I'm starting to see why you don't want to go down this rabbit hole.
