Gmail accounts are chronically "unavailable"

Reported by Meindert | March 25th, 2014 @ 08:36 AM

My Gmail accounts are usually "unavailable," but from time to time go online and get mail. The Activity Viewer says LOGOUT. Sparrow is able to be continuously connected from the same Macintosh. How can I troubleshoot this problem?

I was going to say that it's the same issue as reported in ticket #681, but I see that is your ticket as well. It's fine though to keep this issue in a separate ticket.

First update as described in the other ticket.

In the Activity Viewer, when you click on one of the LOGOUT connections you'll se the log in the lower part of the window. Could you provide (part of) this log?

I assume you get no error message windows before MailMate switches to the “unavailable” state.

Something seems to have happened, and I can see two more e-mails in Inbox, and many e-mails in Archive, but all my Gmail accounts are still dimmed to gray and labeled "(unavailable)". However, I successfully sent an e-mail from MailMate now also, which I was having trouble with.

So Google doesn't like it when I access via a VPN, maybe?

I'm not sure if VPN could play a role. Maybe if it makes the connection slower and it triggers some timeout in MailMate. I would appreciate seeing what happens before the “Failed multiple retries (4).” This is what triggers MailMate to go into the unavailable state and this the most likely place to search for a MailMate bug.

    Thanks for the update.

I have been having this same issue for a few weeks now. Running Version 1.7.2 (4132). I am not using a VPN. I have also noticed that even if I'm not showing "unavailable" MailMate stops downloading new mail after a while. Taking my account offline and back online fixes the issue. I'm fetching both a regular Gmail account and my personal domain email which is hosted with Google Labs.

This is the only line in my activity viewer right now for both accounts:

03:08:48 Error: Failed multiple retries (4). Final error code was 2.

@Jim: Thanks for joining the ticket. Don't forget to “watch” it to get email notifications. The behavior you describe has also been reported by a user by email. Note that the Activity Viewer only logs data when it's open. That might explain why there is only 1 line. Could that explain it?

@Jim: The empty log is a recently introduced bug in the logging system. I'll fix that and let you know when a test version is available. After that I'd like to get a longer log ending with the error you reported. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” to get the latest test release. This test version should not have the log-clearing issue (r4139).

@Meindert: This is the important part:

    08:34:09 Completed action. Observed read/write timeouts: 8/8

Translation: Some action success completes (deleting a message). After a couple of minutes MailMate tries to close the connection since it hasn't been used. For some reason this fails. Maybe VPN has a very short timeout for inactive connections? Unfortunately, it has the side-effect that when MailMate tries connecting to Gmail later on this repeatedly fails. It is unclear (to me) whether this is caused by the VPN or Gmail.

I'm not quite sure what to do about this. If MailMate enters the “Unavailable” state then MailMate should automatically try to reconnect later. Do you know if this happens and if MailMate eventually connects again? Do you experience any problems without VPN?

I'll try to experiment over the next week or so to try to implicate/eliminate variables.

But one factor to consider: Sparrow has never been sensitive to my internet connection or whether I use a VPN. So I think there is an "issue" on the app side. It can be fixed on the app end, somehow, because Sparrow never had the problem. Admittedly, Sparrow is the polar opposite of MailMate, in that it was a Gmail-only app (at first) with at least one person on the development team having come from Google. Sparrow slapped on support for regular IMAP later, while MailMate is an IMAP app that has, as a side goal, tried to support GIMAP.

  • Meindert

    Meindert April 2nd, 2014 @ 03:09 AM

It occurs to me that Sparrow doesn't give as much feedback as to what it's doing as does MailMate, so perhaps I'm assuming that Sparrow is not having connection problems when I don't really have evidence for that. But running the two apps side by side over the past two weeks or so, I do notice mail showing up in Sparrow before MailMate, and I don't get the can't-send problem where sent mail is held in Draft purgatory and repeatedly notifies me that it can't be sent.

    benny April 2nd, 2014 @ 06:13 PM

I'm not sure this problem is fixed, but could you try updating to the latest test release: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now”.

The draft problem sounds like a different issue. Can you send any messages or does it always fail? What is the error message (repeatedly) reported?

I'm still getting "unavailable" displayed on Google-related accounts (I'm using MM 4149 now), but when I choose File > Synchronize > All Sources, the program seems to quickly check all my accounts and lots of stuff happens in the Activity Viewer, despite having been labeled "unavailable" just before the synch.

I'll keep trying it to see if the problem seems to be fixed. For the last couple of days it was working O.K. as long as I quit and restarted MM every hour or so.

  • Meindert

    Meindert April 3rd, 2014 @ 06:21 AM

    A while back I tried:

... while all my Gmail accounts were in the state of "unavailable," and Activity Viewer showed all the Gmail accounts with three LOGOUTs.

First attempt, nothing (my non-Gmail accounts updated, however). A minute later, still nothing. A third time, they all updated. I'm not sure why I had to make three attempts for this to happen.

Now I tried it six times and nothing. Activity Viewer shows IDLE and two LOGOUTs per account.

    From one account:

    06:08:56 Error code: 2
06:08:56 Failed action. Reset observed read/write timeouts: 8/8
    06:08:56 Clearing connection to imap.gmail.com
    06:08:56 Clearing connection to imap.gmail.com
06:08:56 Trying to connect to imap.gmail.com on port 993
06:08:56 Error: Failed connecting to host (imap.gmail.com:993).
    “error:0200200D:system library:connect:Permission denied” “error:20073067:BIO routines:CONN_STATE:connect error” 06:08:56 Error code: 2
06:08:56 Failed action. Reset observed read/write timeouts: 8/8
06:08:56 Error: Failed multiple retries (4). Final error code was 2.

Quitting MailMate and relaunching, only the non-Gmail accounts update, despite repeated attempts.

The above was all via a VPN. Killing the VPN, I try again. No luck. Quitting MM, I relaunch and try again. No luck.

Restarting the VPN to an exit in California, no luck.

Maybe all the login attempts from around the world are making Google think that my accounts are under some sort of attack!

It looks very strange. Do you receive any new emails in the Gmail accounts when this happens. It looks like a persistent problem with connecting to the Gmail server.

    1. What is the last line in the output if you do this in a Terminal window:

      openssl s_client -crlf -connect imap.gmail.com:imaps

    2. You didn't tell me what the SMTP error was (earlier comment in this ticket)?

The “unavailable” state is MailMate telling you it had a problem connecting to the account, but it's going to retry later to see if the problem clears up. This is necessary in order to not show errors for all kinds of temporary connection problems.

Thanks for your patience. I can understand if this is frustrating (it is for me :) ).

On the send issue (maybe that should be a separate issue), Gmail accounts just won't send e-mail for me from MailMate sometimes. Sometimes if I leave it for a while they eventually send. Over this past night though a response to you didn't send all night. Looking at it now in Sparrow, Sparrow thinks it was sent, so it obviously got to Google and then Sparrow picked it up from there.

First off, a simple question: I should be setting port 587 for Gmail, right? Not 465.

It would be really nice if there were a table view in MailMate for all the account settings, editable. I'd like to see them all at once and check for discrepancies. All the form labels along the top, email addresses along the left, and cells for all the data to be entered or for checkboxes to be ticked.

I found issue 392. That led me to try this:

    $ telnet smtp.gmail.com 587 Trying 74.125.25.108...
telnet: connect to address 74.125.25.108: Permission denied
    Trying 74.125.25.109...
telnet: connect to address 74.125.25.109: Permission denied
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
    $ telnet smtp.gmail.com 25 Trying 74.125.25.108...
telnet: connect to address 74.125.25.108: Permission denied
    Trying 74.125.25.109...
telnet: connect to address 74.125.25.109: Permission denied

My tinfoil hat theory on Gmail problems:

I'm an American living overseas, and with certain large net services providers (e.g., Google, PayPal, Yelp) I have frequent problems that I personally believe involve these services trying to combat spam, fraud, blackhat stuff, and so on. I sympathize with their situation. They are probably huge targets for all kinds of bad guys. I'm not a bad guy, but as someone living outside of the U.S. and often using VPNs I think I tick some of the boxes in their profiling of users.

In my experience working out problems with such services I sometimes feel that they are trying to "gaslight" me. For instance, the responses to support requests will be completely non-responsive. Cheery, polite, but as though they didn't read my short, clear e-mail. This goes back and forth. At some point I find it hard to believe the problem is simply that an Indian non-native English support person doesn't understand what I'm saying. In phone calls (PayPay ... Google has no number) the support person will sometimes 'fess up that they are just following a script for people who have the sort of problem I'm having.

I think they treat customers like this because once a customer's profile puts him in the "probable bad guy" category, they do not want to give the bad guy any hints on how to get around the limitations. They do not even want the bad guy to know that he's been ID'd as a bad guy. So they introduce plausibly deniable problems into his access to their system and if contacted for support they waste his time and try to drive him crazy.

I think that with Gmail, Google might have systems in place to deal with spam and other bad-guy e-mail stuff. Once you're ID'd they may have ways of tracking your IP address or connection or all your accounts or use super-cookies (ever notice how they still seem to know who you are after a Safari "Reset Safari" command?) or even temporary ban certain ISPs. Because of the pervasiveness and apparent randomness of these kinds of measures, it would be impossible to do normal troubleshooting where you scientifically limit variables and try different things.

    Am I paranoid? Maybe.

Personally, my goal is to get the hell off of Google just as I did for PayPal a couple of years ago. In a couple of weeks I think I will have achieved that, now that I have figured out how to get my past mail stored locally with MailMate. Runbox, Fastmail, whoever, here I come! I'll leave the Gmail troubleshooting up to you guys at that point. Have fun!

Correction: I think I meant port 465 is right, not 587 ... correct? SSL, not TLS. So I should be using 465. Right?

You can use any port you like (25, 465, 587). When SSL is enabled in MailMate then MailMate won't allow an insecure connection. Secure connections are possible on all ports (as long as they are open). I'll recommend port 587 for Gmail..

    The IMAP login looks fine.

I would like to see more logs for both SMTP and IMAP issues. Fetch the latest test release and then keep the Activity Viewer open. When you have experienced a problem then use “Help ▸ Send Feedback” to simply send me all logs. Hopefully that can give me an idea about what goes wrong.

    Thanks in advance.

I was having trouble sending e-mail from a main account (Google Apps) today. It seemed to be complaining about my password. Did I make a mistake with my password? Or is Google gaslighting me? I was getting mail O.K. via IMAP. I'm VPNing via Hong Kong today, a location Google particularly seems to dislike. At any rate, it finally asked for my password, I cut and pasted it in from 1Password, and I finally was able to send the e-mail via SMTP. I used manual "distortion mode" in the following log ... too bad distortion mode doesn't work in Activity Viewer, but that would probably be a pain to implement reliably, and isn't a normal user-facing feature.

Thanks, that last log does indicate a problem in my SMTP code. I'll look into it.

I think I may have found a problem on my end. I remember that I had tried turning off Virux Barrier X6 to see if it would cure the spinning pizza problem, and it seemed to help. Today I had an e-mail in Drafts that just wouldn't send. I restarted MailMate, which I had done before, and also turned off Virus Barrier. The mail went right out. And then just now I came back to my Macintosh to find no new mail, which is unusual after so many hours. On a hunch, I turned off Virus Barrier, and several messages came through. And just now I sent another message out with no delay.

This would be a minor bummer. I have to turn off Virus Barrier to get the App Store to work, but I don't use the App Store that much. With e-mail, you need it going all the time. I don't think Sparrow was bothered by Virus Barrier. The main problem that apps have with Virus Barrier are the Anti-Spyware settings, and I've turned those completely off for MailMate, so I'm not sure what other feature might be causing a problem.

At any rate, if this turns out to be the source of most of my problems, I can stop being paranoid about Google and get on with my mail migration.

I don't see how the virus software could affect sending messages (unless it identifies a draft as containing a virus, but that's unlikely). I still haven't looked into the cause of the log you provided above, but it does indicate a problem in MailMate.

Caveat: With Gmail you might experience that sending a message to yourself doesn't work. This is because Gmail cannot handle duplicate messages (a message present in both the sent messages folder and the Inbox).

I haven't sent enough e-mails to make a final judgment, but I'm pretty sure by now that MailMate and Virus Barrier don't play nicely with each other. Although I can get some e-mails coming in with Virus Barrier on, when I turn it off the floodgates open.

I don't think the VPN is a problem at all. Restarting MailMate seems to unclog things a bit, but not as dramatically as turning off Virus Barrier.

I realize that my comment right above leaves out something important: Virus Barrier only causes problems with Google-hosted e-mail. AOL, Runbox, Dreamhost, Pair, all fine even with Virus Barrier running.

Benny, I'm also seeing this behavior, utilizing Version 1.7.2 (3905) which I had recently upgraded to (but this issue happened prior to upgrade as well).
I have 2 "gmail based" accounts. One is my personal account, and the other is through work.
Personal gmail has IMAP server: imap.gmail.com, and require SSL is checked. SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com, require SSL checked.
My work account never has the issue. Its info is nearly identical though...
IMAP server: imap.gmail.com, Require SSL is checked
SMTP server: smtp.googlemail.com, require SSL is checked.

Note that this worked great with no issues for months, but now its happening daily..

I just read through most of the ticket, if you need addiitonal info let me know!

@tim: First try updating to the latest beta (Software Update preferences pane). If you still have the issue then I need you to:

    1. Open the Activity Viewer (⌥⌘0) while the Gmail account is connected.
    2. Wait until you have seen the issue.
    3. Use “Help ▸ Send Server Logs” such that I can review the logs.

    Thanks in advance.

@benny, Thanks for the quick response. I've updated to the latest beta, opened the activity viewer, and will await the issue arising.
