Clicking an address should search in any address field

Reported by fgeller | February 2nd, 2011 @ 07:10 PM

Currently, clicking an address in the From: header pops up the search results for other messages where the address is also found in the From: header. Similar to the correspondence field, I think it would be nice to click on the address (possibly adding a modifier) and search for all mails where the clicked address appears in any given address field.

A modifier is currently used to keep the current mailbox selected instead of jumping to “All Messages”.

There is a context sensitive menu over the from-value in the messages outline. I have added two items to its Find menu allowing one to search for “From or To {from.address}“ or “From or To {from.name}”. I hope that is good enough for now (I have plans for other ways to make these searches, but it is not going to be in the near future).

    I see, thanks!

Still, I'd greatly appreciate the ability to search for related messages by clicking on the address in the simple header of the message viewer (I don't have to scan the listed mails in the outline to find the one I'm currently reading-- yes, it's highlighted ;)) . How about a different modifier? Shift? Or making it customizable?

    Me, too.

    The alt-Click trick is nice.
The contextual menu "from or to" item, too.

Mh, what would do the trick is to offer the context menu in a sub-menu. Best in the form 'find messages with present from address' - it has to be invariable to allow OS X shortcuts.
An issue is that the same would be needed for recipients in the 'Sent' folders.

    Just an idea.

I have considered gathering all the various searching possibilities in a
menu, but I am not sure it is the right way to go. Main reason is that I
want this to be a configurable/extendable system (and it already is in
some of the experimental parts of MailMate). I would probably prefer 1
shortcut to popup a window, and then abbreviations to select the desired
search type – similar to the Mailbox chooser (⌘T).
