Line height/clipping issues in message list

Reported by David Shepherdson | December 24th, 2010 @ 12:06 AM

With certain fonts (not all, but plenty that I've tried), the message list seems to do something funny with the line height or vertical spacing, meaning that the text is displayed too low in the row, and therefore gets cut off at the bottom.

Fonts I've seen this problem with include Futura, Georgia, Gill Sans, Menlo and Apple Chancery. Fonts that don't exhibit this problem include Lucida Grande, Helvetica, Monaco, Palatino and Times.

I've attached two screenshots demonstrating the problem: you can see that the text is not vertically centred within the selected row, and you can see that the bottom parts of letters are being cut off (e.g. 'Yesterday' and 'Today' appear like 'Yesterdav' and 'Todav').

Thanks. I'll look into it although it may be postponed until after version 1.0 is released. I have several font-related todo items for the messages outline including support for multiples lines/font sizes.

Wanted to add that I'm seeing a number of related issues with the user's selected font size for the message list being ignored by the app. Most obvious case is the "From" column in the Sent mailbox. After setting the font to Lucida Grande 11 pt, on returning to the mailbox, the "From" column has been bumped up to a larger size, resulting in the clipping described above, just for the one column. See attached screenshot.

I've observed related behavior in other mailboxes. For example, when displaying the "Size" column in any mailbox, it's initially added at a larger incorrect size (see screenshot). The user can reset the font to correct this, but later the "Size" column will revert to using the larger type size. This happens with other added columns as well, although I've not gone through to create an exhaustive list.

@bradford: Thanks for reporting this problem. It has been fixed now. (Unfortunately it is unrelated to the clipping issues described by the creator of this ticket.)

The clipping issue has (I believe) been fixed (part of the next update).
