external harddisks spinning up when starting MailMate
Reported by Thomas Spitaler | September 28th, 2021 @ 09:02 AM
MailMate is installed on my mac's internal drive.
Time Machine is configured to backup to an external drive.
The external drive is normally in sleep/standby and only spins up when Time Machine is running.
Now, it also spins up every time I launch MailMate.
I think it should not spin up. There is no data on the disk that MailMate needs access to. Just the Time Machine backups are kept on the external drive.

I'm not sure what could trigger this and it has been some time since I've debugged file system access issues. There are utilities which can watch disk activity, e.g., like this in the Terminal window:
sudo fs_usage MailMate
There might be better ways though. You can try googling for other tools, but if you find out what is accessed on the drive then let me know and maybe I can change something.
