choose location of on-disk mailstore
Reported by Charlie Allom | July 16th, 2012 @ 01:47 PM
Some accounts (hundreds of thousands of emails) I like to store on an SSD. I use notmuch like this and the speed increase for lots of little files is remarkable.
Can we get an option to choose the local email disk store path, and possibly an inbuilt move as well (for changing our minds).

- State changed from new to bluesky
First of all, MailMate does not really cope well with hundreds of thousands of emails. It is going to hurt performance (although it is much better in the latest betas). MailMate is mainly designed for handling incoming email efficiently and not for long-term huge archives.
Secondly, I assume what you basically want to do is to be able to “move”
~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Messages/
. It has previously been requested that it was possible to store~/Library/Application Support/MailMate
on a USB disk (for security/mobility) and I guess that would solve your problem as well. One major problem with such a feature would be Apples sandboxing requirements and it would probably have to be a non-app-store feature. A minor problem is that the disk must support metadata, but that could be checked by MailMate.I cannot claim it is a feature that is at the top of my list, but you and others are welcome to add thoughts and use cases to this ticket. For now, I'm going to mark it as 'bluesky' (the state for features not likely to be implemented for 1.x if ever).
Have you tried symlinking
Messages
or one of the subdirectories withinMessages/IMAP
? If it works (I'm not sure) it would really be the most flexible approach (if it fails I'm willing to try to fix whatever the problem is). -

Thanks for the detailed reply.
I have symlinked the Application Support to a USB mounted SSD. While
it speeds up the launch-time, there is a weird side affect of
alt-tabbing to the MailMate window. Bizarre. If you are certain of the MailMate roadmap to deal with the smaller
inbox, then so be it :) -

Alt-tabbing: What happens and what do you expect to happen?
Launch time should be much better with the latest beta (see the Software Update preferences pane). Actually, searching would also be faster if you start over (deleting the app-support folder), but it is not required to do so (it only affects performance).

I won't railroad the thread with performance related issues. If I can narrow it down to the symlink being the catalyst, then I'll file another ticket.
