Keyboard repeat appears to be broken

Reported by Mike Conley | August 15th, 2019 @ 10:04 PM

I've noticed suddenly that holding down a key no longer results in repeated characters as it should.

Key repeat seems to work in other apps (Safari, Notes, Terminal, BBEdit), but not in the MailMate composer window.

macOS 10.14.6, MailMate 1.12.5 (5643).

    Hmm. This seems to work now. No idea what the problem was.

    This is still an issue in 5661, works for symbols but not alpha numeric characters.

    I have the opposite problem: When deleting (backspace-key) or archiving (e-key) a selected message pressing these keys, it often deletes/archives a second message as if I have pressed the key for too long (which I did not). Could that be related somehow?

    UPDATE: Seems as if the backspace key on my macbookpros keyboard is broken somehow - I have seen this effect in an other application too lately.

    @Chris: Try this:

    defaults write com.freron.MailMate ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool NO

    @Ingo: Let me know if you think it's a MailMate issue.

    I just tried this again in 5667, and key repeat in the composer window fails.

    As suggested above, I executed

    defaults write com.freron.MailMate ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool NO

    and key repeat works. Setting it to YES causes key repeat to fail again.

    • State changed from “new” to “accepted”

    @Mike: It's a macOS “feature”. For some reason there's no GUI to change it (globally) even though there's a setting for key repeat speed, but I guess I could make a GUI option to enable/disable it. If I change the default behavior I'm pretty sure I'm going to get complaints though :)

    I guess I'm surprised that anyone would want the default behaviour to be 'no key repeat'. The default behaviour in every text editing application I've ever used on a Mac is to repeat when the key is held down.
