Feature request: attach a notes to an email

Reported by Mike K | January 10th, 2019 @ 08:50 PM

You know what would be a neat feature for productivity? Having some way to attach notes for myself to any saved email, just a way to jot things down that I'd see when looked back on the email. Almost like tags, but designed to hold a much longer block of text, not just very short phrases. One note field per email would be fine. They would just live in MailMate, or maybe be attached somehow like tags are and saved with the email on the server, but only be for my own reference.

Great minds things alike... that's actually what I've been doing, but I made the feature request because keeping notes in a separate "draft" isn't really working that well for me.

    • State changed from “new” to “duplicate”

This has been requested several times, e.g., in ticket #813, but it's currently not high on my list of things to do.

I wrote the following to a user several years ago: “For each email, I would like it to be possible to add a note (Markdown of course). When viewing a message it should be possible to view this note and to edit it. Implementation-wise I would save it as a an email reply (maybe reply-to-self) with a simple plain text body part. I would also add a special header which MailMate would use to identify the message as a note.

Other email clients would display the message as a reply, but MailMate would be able to “hide” the message and display it as a note instead.

    That's the basic idea. [...]

But I'm not promising this feature. I'm just telling you what I have on my drawing board.”

This is, more or less, how I still think of this feature. I do think though that maybe a more general system would be better, that is, a system wide feature allowing one to easily add notes to any type of file. I'm aware of an unreleased app which can do this. I can add a note here when it's released in case it has any interest.
