Auto-BCC by Source (i.e. by IMAP account)

Reported by Wes Carroll | September 14th, 2018 @ 12:54 AM

Hi Benny!

I see from https://manual.mailmate-app.com/hidden_preferences:

The following can be used to add a BCC (blind carbon copy) header by default to all outgoing messages:
defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDefaultBccHeader -string me@example.com

In my case, MailMate handles two "sources" i.e. IMAP accounts; call them me@me.com (work) and me@gmail.com (personal). I would like to set up my client such that whenever I send an email from me@me.com it gets BCC'ed to a special address (i.e. my work's CRM tool), but whenever I send from me@gmail.com it does not.

Can this be done? If so, how, please?

Thanks!

No, this is not currently possible. A general solution would be something which allows the default bcc-value to depend on the sending address. A mapping from sender address to bcc address. Well, I guess something even more general could depend on other values in the message.

The best MailMate can do is what came next in the manual: “Using the special value "<.sender.>" tells MailMate to use the sending address of the related account.”

    ...

Ok, I spent a bit of time on this and I've added that this preference can also be a dictionary. Here's an example:

    defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDefaultBccHeader -dict "me@me.com" "special@example.com" "me2@me.com" "special2@example.com"

In your case you just need the first pair. Anything else would then result in an empty Bcc. Does that solve your problem?

Let me know if this works for you in the next update.

    Great, thanks!

Sorry to have to ask such a basic follow-up question, but:

How can I tell when this (committed) fix will be available to me for testing/use?

    Thanks again.

And yes, if I understand this correctly, this will solve my problem. I'm eager to give it a try.
