Need help adding Gmail account
Reported by Steve Wehba | December 20th, 2017 @ 05:20 AM
I was able to successfully add a gmail account. Everything was working fine, and then just stopped working. Now I get the following error whenever I attempt to connect to gmail from Mailmate:
Error: “Server response: “B1 NO [ALERT] Please log in via your web browser:
https://support.google.com/mail/accounts/answer/78754 (Failure)”. Command attempted:
“B1 AUTHENTICATE PLAIN ••••••••••”.”
In the IMAP Account Setting dialog, I am using the following settings:
Email Address(es):
IMAP Server: map.gmail.com
Port: 993
User Name:
Password:
[x] Require SSL [ ] OAuth2
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
User Name:
Password:
[x] Require SSL [ ] OAuth2
Any ideas about what I may be doing wrong?
Thanks,
--Steve

I figured out what was going on. Apparently, gmail considers Mailmate a less than secure app and blocks it's access. I had to configure gmail to permit access from "less secure apps". Benny, you may want to investigate why gmail considers MM less secure.

You need to use the OAuth2 setting to avoid the warning and to avoid enabling the “less secure apps” setting. I'm not a fan of the way Google labels third party desktop email clients as “less secure”, but at least they provide an alternative. More about my thoughts on that here.
