The new Outgoing counter

Reported by Robert Brenstein | February 8th, 2017 @ 04:03 PM

I just upgraded to MM Version 1.9.6 (5344) and read about the Outgoing message counter for the Drafts mailbox. When I select All, the counter (gray) shows 2. After select Outgoing as the new counter, I expected to see the counter of 1 or 2 (depending how you implemented this), but there is no counter shown. I have 1 message due to be sent in 6 mins and another due to be sent in 4 weeks.

I should have mentioned that I have set the default delay of 10 mins.

Ok, I just saw the read counter. It showed up only when a message was actually in the process of being sent. I don't know about other users, but I find such a counter rather useless. MM spins a cog wheel when sending and if I need to see what's going on, I can click on the Drafts mailbox. I expected this counter to show the number of messages due to be sent within the default send delay or all messages queued for sending ("all" counts true drafts as well).

    I meant the "red" counter...

The red counter is useful when something does not work as expected. Some users have reported issues with emails not being sent and they can now more easily spot this issue -- whether it's a MailMate bug or a local network issue. (It's also useful for users being offline.)

I did consider another counter which would include both pending and outgoing messages, but I couldn't decide what to name it :)

I've added it now with the name “Pending & Outgoing” to clearly indicate that it's more than “Outgoing”. It's in the next update.

My suggestion would be to leave "Outgoing" as it is now. I can imagine someone sending a bunch of emails at once and then this counter would dutifully show how many are still to be sent, red color nicely emphasizing an ongoing activity.

I would further suggest to add a new counter "Pending" which counts messages queued for sending but not yet "Outgoing". Keep this counter gray.

Furthermore, since the Counter submenu is already being customized, you could remove the menu item Unreplied. I don't see that any message in the Drafts mailbox can be unreplied.

If you want to get fancy, you could add a user option (could be thru the defaults command) for MM to automatically toggle Outgoing and Pending when Pending is selected. I mean that MM would switch to Outgoing when it is sending any messages and return to Pending afterwards.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I did add a second counter for the pending although I named it Pending & Outgoing to clearly state that it's a superset of Outgoing.
