Tagged Message Duplicated in "Tagged" Smartfolder Submailbox

Reported by Pradip Thachile | October 18th, 2015 @ 08:28 PM

Hi,

I have altered the "Tagged" smart folder to have sub-mailboxes by unique tags (see attachment #1). I currently have two tags on several messages ("eiusmod sint-in" and "labore mollit" - Distortion Mode). However, the 'Tagged" smart folder shows three tags - the two mentioned and "Nulla" (Other) - see attachment #2. If I see what messages are tagged in "Other", it is interestingly one of the messages from "eiusmod sint-in" (see screenshot). As I said earlier, only two tags have been created and used; moreover I've never used tags prior to Mailmate just now. What's going on here?

My wife is currently trialling Mailmate on my recommendation, and she sees some strange behaviour with tags, along these lines as well (although in her case the tags don't seem to stick to a message, and sometimes the count in the "Tagged" folder will momentarily increase and then decrease!).

Any insight you could offer would help us out. Thanks!

    • State changed from “new” to “cantreproduce”

That is strange. The screenshot with “Other” showing something in the “Tags” column is sufficient to show that something is wrong. I checked my own (huge) “Other” mailbox, but none of those had any tags. This makes me think it's a “dynamic” problem, that is, it requires recent changes. Does the problem persist if you relaunch MailMate?

The problems seen by your wife sounds different. Some servers don't support IMAP keywords (which are used for tags) very well or have some upper limit on the number of keywords. This can some times result in weird behavior such as tags reverting to a previous state. I would need server logs to analyze it in more detail. Is some of this behavior reproducible?

The problem does not persist if I restart MailMate, so I would certainly agree with your assertion that it is "dynamic" in nature.

As for my wife's issue, we both use the exact same mail server (Zoho Mail, imap.zoho.com), so it's a bit odd to see these issues with her and not me. I will debug further on her computer and report back once I can determine a consistent manner in which to reproduce the defect.

I was able to debug the issue on my wife's computer some more. She has a single tag: "bellingham capital expense". This tag works. She now tries to create and use another tag "bellingham maintenance expense", but while she can create this tag, it does not actually "stick" to an e-mail. It doesn't show up as a sub-mailbox in the "Tagged" smart mailbox, yet a mysterious "Other" submailbox shows up with this single e-mail. Looking at the tags for this e-mail, it does not show that it has been tagged as "bellingham maintenance expense". Tagging other e-mails with "bellingham maintenance expense" just increments the "Other" category. Viewing tags on these messages do not show the presence of this tag. Interestingly, after restarting Mailmate, the "Other" category disappears as do all tagged messages beneath it.

She then decided to create and use a different tag: "maintenance expense". This worked just fine and as expected (i.e. message has tag when viewed, shows up as sub-mailbox).

Does it have something to do with the length of the tags? Other thoughts or diagnostics we could perform?

It sounds like there might be two issues. The “Other” issue and the length of tag issue. I could imagine that the length of the tag could be a problem for some servers, but it's not a known issue. Note that the Tags preferences pane does allow you to have a long display name mapped to a short IMAP keyword.

I cannot reproduce anything though. My guess is that it's somehow related to the behavior of the Zoho server.
