Lack of new line when caret at top and signature at bottom
Reported by Sean Anderson | August 1st, 2015 @ 04:28 AM
First, thanks for all your hard work creating and maintaining such a fantastic email client.
One thing that's been bothering me is the lack of new line if I set the caret for top posting and signature placement to the bottom. This particular setup leaves the caret immediately before the attribution line and means I have to hit the enter key twice every time I reply to an email before I can start typing. (Unless I'm missing a setting somewhere?)
I'm aware of the advantages of top posting vs. bottom posting and often interleave replies, but many people I interact with expect this arrangement (top post with signature at bottom) — probably because it's the default in many other email clients and services (e.g. Gmail).
Steps to reproduce:
- Add a signature
- Set default signature placement to "Bottom"
- Set caret placement to "Always at Top"
- Click "Reset Usage History" if needed
- Reply to an email
Expected results:
Caret (represented by a | below) is at top of message, there is a blank line, and then the "On 31 Jul 2015, ..." attribution line starts.

This is also how the caret position works in MailMate if caret placement is set to "Always at Top" and signature position is set to "Top" (even if there's no signature).
Actual results:
Cursor is immediately before "On 31 Jul 2015, ..." with no line breaks. I have to hit the enter key twice before I can start typing.

If I don't hit the enter key twice I get:

+1. I'm encountering the same exact problem after tinkering with the signature feature.

+1 I'm evaluating this mail client, and this is a pain point (otherwise good so far first day).

The “fix” is a separate setting named “Always at Top (with Newlines)”. Some users do in-between replies and therefore it has to be a separate setting. You'll have to explicitly change the setting to get the alternative behavior.
I'll release a test version later today: Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update preferences pane (you need r5196+).
