MailMate "damaged or incomplete"

Reported by mrspaceman | April 20th, 2015 @ 07:28 AM

Hello! I was on holiday for about a month, and got a weird error when launching MM.

It's not too big of a deal, due to IMAP, but I don't have a backup of the preferences (new computer). Any way for me to restore MM out of this situation, or do I just need to reinstall?

I have 2 screenshots to attach, but unable to, due to 'upload quota' being reached.

1) the error message, "You can't open the application "MailMate" because it may be damagd or incomplete."
2) the app icon has been replaced by a generic greyed out app icon with a circle/slash through it (like a no smoking sign)

Somehow your copy of MailMate was damaged. This is a bad sign since it could be the result of a hardware failure although it could also be a software failure. It cannot be a MailMate bug since MailMate never alters anything within its own application bundle (applications should never do that). The good news is that you can just download a fresh copy of MailMate and replace the one you have. You do not lose any settings since they are saved elsewhere.

Sorry about the quota problem. I need to do something about that -- just haven't decided what to do yet.

I have a related issue - I'm trying to split my home life from work.

User a (me at home) bought and installed MM (not sure if I selected all users or just me) then tried to create user b (me at work) and the only app that doesn't work is MM - I have the same greyed out circle with a cross icon.

Can I just delete MM and reinstall for all users - without touching any of the sub dirs:-

    /Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate/*.plist /Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate/Resources/ /Users//Library/Application Support/MailMate/Bundles/ /Users//Library/Preferences/com.freron.MailMate.plist

Note that the last file also contains most of what you have changed in MailMate preferences or have changed using the defaults command. You can only copy this file before launching MailMate on the destination machine. Otherwise, you might have problems with the file being overwritten by an older version cached by the system.

    Ok,

    I'm getting nowhere here.

I've just installed MailMate into the user b setup, which generated a warning telling me the zero bytes MailMate was already there, so I created a copy.

Needless to say, I now have a useless mailmate in user b, with a mailmate copy in user b, but just to piss me off I now have a fulling working mailmate and mailmate copy in user a.

To answer your first question: Yes, you can always remove copies of MailMate and install others without it affecting any of your settings.

In general: MailMate itself is not really involved in the install process. It's just a compressed folder you download as a file which is then uncompressed by macOS when double-clicking it. The folder (represented by the application icon) can then be moved wherever you want it installed.

To avoid any issues with user permissions when updating MailMate then I would suggest that you simply wipe out all copies installed of MailMate now and then install MailMate in the user-centric Applications folder in both accounts. That should definitely work (and you have the possible advantage of maybe using the public release of MailMate when using your work account and more experimental releases on your user account).
